Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace (2008) is the 22nd James Bond film by EON Productions, due for release in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2008 and in North America on 14 November. The sequel to the2006 film Casino Royale, it is directed by Marc Forster, and features Daniel Craig's second performance as James Bond. In the film, Bond battles Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a member of the Quantum organisation posing as an environmentalist, who intends to stage a coup d'état in Bolivia to take control of its water supply. Bond seeks revenge for the death of Vesper Lynd, and is assisted by Camille (Olga Kurylenko), who also wants to kill Greene.

Producer Michael G. Wilson created the film's plot while Casino Royale was shooting. Neal PurvisRobert WadePaul Haggis and Joshua Zetumer contributed to the script. The title was chosen from a 1960 short story in Ian Fleming's For Your Eyes Only, though the film is not expected to contain any elements of the original story. Location filming took place in Panama,ChileItaly and Austria, while the sets were built at Pinewood Studios. Forster aimed to make the film more modern yet classic: antique planes were used for a dogfight sequence, while Dennis Gassner's set designs are reminiscent of Ken Adam's work on several early Bond films, yet Forster rejected a grotesque appearance for Greene to comment on the hidden nature of the film's corporate villains.

BABYLON A.D

BABYLON A.D

Yesterday, we reported that the upcoming Vin Diesel movie Babylon A.D. was being cut by 20th Century Fox from a running time of 160 minute running time to 90 minutes.

Today producers are denying the story, saying that the movie’s running time will be and has always been around an hour and forty minutes and that audiences will be getting the entire vision of director Mathieu Kassovitz.

In a post about the film on their MySpace blog, the production company said, “The last days have been busy with news about the length and the rating of Babylon AD. I always find it amazing to see rumors grow from other rumors or misunderstanding. Therefore I think the time is good to give you some updates.

Babylon AD has never had a 2h 40min cut. This rumor came from a joke Mathieu did in front of some journalists last September. Apparently some of them didn’t understand it. … The approximate length of the film is 1h40min, and this is what has been delivered to our partner, FOX. So I can reassure you, FOX is not chopping up the film and cutting 70 [minutes], like I read on Rotten Tomatoes! :-)”

The blog post added that the film was always designed to be PG-13. “The truth is Fox, like any other studio, will have their final cut on their territories, and Mathieu Kassovitz has his on the European ones. So there will naturally be a few differences between the two versions.”

Teaser trailers for the SF movie, starring Vin Diesel, are in the works. “A French teaser should be released on the Web quite soon!” the blog reported.

Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider

In the days of the American Old West, Mephistopheles (Peter Fonda) sent his bounty hunter of the damned, the Ghost Rider, to retrieve a contract for a thousand corrupt souls from the town of San Venganza. Because such a large amount of souls would cause Hell on Earth if taken on by one demon, the Rider refused to give the contract — and therefore, the souls — to Mephistopheles; instead, he outran Mephistopheles and hid himself and the contract.

A century and a half later, Mephistopheles reaches out to seventeen-year-old stunt motorcycle riderJohnny Blaze (Matt Long/Nicolas Cage), offering to cure his father's lung cancer in exchange for Johnny's soul. Johnny inadvertently signs the contract when a drop of his blood lands on it. His father's cancer is cured, but he dies that same day in a horrific bike crash. Johnny accuses Mephistopheles of causing his father's death, but Mephistopheles considers their contract fulfilled. Years later, Johnny has become a stunt rider famous for walking away from crashes unharmed.

Before a particularly dangerous new stunt, Johnny meets his childhood sweetheart Roxanne (Raquel Alessi/Eva Mendes), now a journalist, and holds a dinner date with her that evening. At the same time, Blackheart (Wes Bentley), Mephistopheles' son, comes to Earth to find the lost contract and use its power to overcome his father. He calls forth the fallen angels known as the Hidden, a trio of demon spirits who represent three of the four elements — the water elemental Wallow (Daniel Frederiksen), the earth elemental Gressil (Laurence Breuls), and the air elemental Abigor (Mathew Wilkinson) — to act as his allies. In response, Mephistopheles makes Johnny the new Ghost Rider, offering Johnny his soul in return for defeating Blackheart. Johnny confronts Blackheart at a train station where the contract was once buried, and kills Gressil while the others escape. On his way out, he uses his 'Penance Stare', a supernatural ability which sears the pain of all whom a person has harmed into the wrongdoer's soul, on a mugger, leaving the man catatonic.

The next day, Johnny wakes up in a cemetery chapel, where he meets a man called the Caretaker(Sam Elliott), who seems to know all the history of the Ghost Rider. When he arrives home, Johnny finds Roxanne and tries to explain his situation, which is why he missed their date. She leaves in anger and disbelief at his tale. The police arrive and take Johnny into custody for his connection to the damage done to the city and the deaths caused by Blackheart. He transforms into Ghost Rider in the cell and escapes to track down Blackheart. He fights and kills Abigor, in full view of Roxanne and much of the police force. Observing the scene after obtaining the location of the contract, Blackheart realizes that Roxanne is Johnny's weakness.

Johnny goes for advice to the Caretaker, who tells him of his predecessor, Carter Slade, a Texas Ranger who was a man of honor before his greed placed him before the gallows for his misdeeds. Slade made a deal with Mephistopheles to break free; in return, Slade became the Ghost Rider who hid the contract of San Venganza. The Caretaker then warns Johnny to stay away from those whom Blackheart and the fallen angels can use against him. This advice is too late; Johnny returns home to find that Blackheart already has Roxanne. During their resulting fight, Johnny finds that his Penance Stare has no effect on Blackheart, who has no (human) soul. Blackheart threatens to kill Roxanne if Johnny does not deliver the contract to him.

Johnny returns to the Caretaker to obtain the contract. Though reminded of the consequences, Johnny asks the Caretaker to trust him. The Caretaker then reveals that he is Carter Slade, having held on to his last bit of power in expectation of this moment. He informs Johnny that God is on his side because he made his deal with Mephistopheles because of love rather than greed or desperation, and shows Johnny the way to San Venganza. They ride together into the desert in Ghost Rider form. They stop a short distance from the town, and Slade gives Johnny his shotgun and the warning to "stick to the shadows" before fading away.

After killing Wallow, the last of the Hidden, Johnny gives the contract to Blackheart. He quickly transforms into Ghost Rider in an effort to subdue Blackheart, but dawn comes and he is rendered powerless. Blackheart uses the contract to absorb the 1,000 souls into his body, taking the name "Legion." Legion is now more than a match for Johnny, but is distracted when Roxanne uses Johnny's discarded shotgun to separate them. After she fruitlessly fires off its remaining ammunition, Johnny takes the gun and moves it into the shadows. This allows him to create a "hellfire shotgun" to blast Legion apart. Legion reforms, but Johnny moves in and uses his Penance Stare, made effective by the thousand souls inhabiting Legion's body, to render him catatonic. Johnny turns away from Roxanne, ashamed of his monstrous appearance, but she shows him that she is not afraid of what Johnny has become.

Mephistopheles appears and gives Johnny his soul, offering to take back the curse of the Ghost Rider. Johnny refuses, saying that he will use his power against Mephistopheles, and against all harm that comes to the innocent. Infuriated of being robbed of the power, Mephistopheles vows to make Johnny pay, to which Johnny in response recites his favorite saying: "You can't live in fear." Mephistopheles then disappears, taking Blackheart's body with him. Johnny and Roxanne share some parting words at the tree on which Johnny carved "J&R FOREVER" at the beginning of the film. Roxanne then tells Johnny that he got his second chance before sharing a final kiss with him. Johnny then rides away on his motorcycle, now a legend in his own right. The film concludes with a rendition of the song "Ghost Riders in the Sky".

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Han (Li), a warlord in Ancient China, conquers his enemies and becomes the first Emperor of China, known as the Dragon Emperor. As his first act as emperor, Han orders the construction of the Great Wall of China, burying his former enemies beneath it and cursing them to hold it up for all eternity. Han orders a witch, Zi Yuan (Yeoh), to search for the secret to immortality with the aid of Han's second in command, General Ming Guo (Wong). Zi Yuan and Ming fall in love, angering Han who desired Zi Yuan for himself. After Zi Yuan supposedly casts the immortality spell on Han, he kills Ming and wounds Zi Yuan. She then reveals that she has in fact cursed Han and his army who are encased in terracotta, becoming the Terracotta Army, permitting Zi Yuan to escape.

In 1946, 13 years after the events of The Mummy Returns, Alex O'Connell (Ford), son to Rick (Fraser) and Evelyn (Bello), locates Han's tomb with the financial backing of Roger Wilson (Calder), an archaeology professor. Alex is attacked by an unknown woman, but succeeds in bringing Han's coffin to Shanghai. Meanwhile, the British government entrusts the O'Connells to take the Eye of Shangri-Laback to China as a good faith gesture to the Chinese. It is revealed that Wilson is in league with a paramilitary group led by General Yang (Chau-Sang) and his second-in-command, Choi (Meng), who see Han as the only one who can bring order and greatness back to China. Zi attacks Han in his coffin, which only turns out to be a decoy. They use the Eye to remove the terracota encasing Han and resurrect him. Han accepts the service of Choi and Yang but kills Wilson. The woman from the excavation site tries to kill Han with a dagger cursed by Zi Yuan, but is unsuccessful and Han takes the dagger.

The woman reveals herself to the O'Connells as Lin (Leong), Zi Yuan's and Ming's daughter, who is immortal due to the power of the waters of Shangri-La. The group, along with Evelyn's brother Johnathan Carnahan (Hannah), travel to a tower in the Himalayas that will reveal the path to Shangri-La when the Eye is placed on top of it. They hold off the soldiers under Yang with the help of three Himalayan Yeti summoned by Lin, but are ultimately unable to prevent Han from learning the location of Shangri-La. He also tries to kill Alex to keep him from starting a avalanche by throwing a dagger at him, but Rick jumps in and takes it in place of his son. The avalanche triggered by Alex allows them to reach Shangri-La before Han and meet with Zi Yuan. Zi Yuan heals Rick's wound. Alex and Lin have grown attached to each other but Lin pushes the relationship away due to her immortality. Han arrives and bathes in the waters which restore his human form and youth, replenishes his powers, and gives him the ability to shapeshift. He transforms into a three-headed dragon, kidnaps Lin, and flies to his tomb where he raises the Terracotta Army. Han announces that once he leads his army across the Great Wall, an ancient spell will make them invincible.

The O'Connells and Zi Yuan pursue Han to the Great Wall where Zi Yuan sacrifices her own and Lin's immortality to revive those buried beneath the Great Wall and General Ming. The undead army and the Terracotta Army fight while Zi Yuan fights Han, sacrificing herself to steal back the cursed dagger. Han transforms into a Chinese demon and goes beneath the Great Wall in order to use his powers to draw Ming's army back underneath it. Rick and Alex tackle Han with the dagger but are outmatched and the dagger is broken. Rick challenges Han to a fair fight, and when Han transforms back into human form, Rick manages to plunge the dagger into Han's heart while Alex stabs Han with the blade. With Han defeated, his army crumbles and turns to dust. Ming's army celebrates briefly before going back to rest.

The O'Connells return to Shanghai, where Alex and Lin fall in love. Jonathan decides to move to Peru with the Eye of Shangri-La, which he had stolen himself, believing there won't be any mummies there. An ending sentence appears, explaining that shortly after his arrival, mummy sightings have occurred.

Resident Evil 3

Aliens Vs. Predator

Alien vs. Predator

Alien vs. Predator, or Aliens versus Predator (both titles abbreviated AvP), is a science fiction / horror fiction series spanning several media. The series is a crossover between two famous film franchises about extraterrestrial beings: the Aliens and the Predators. In Alien vs. Predator, the two species are in conflict with one another.]

Action figures

In 1994, Kenner released a collection of action figures known as Aliens vs. Predator. This followed the two initial series of Aliens which were actually based on an animated series, Operation: Aliens, that was never broadcast. As such, the inclusion of Predator is often considered the 3rd and 4th series of the Aliens line. This collection includes several Aliens, many of which feature built-in attack features, and Predators, which include removable masks and battle weapons such as spears and missile launchers. The figures generally possess 5 points of articulation, and some include a mini Dark Horse comic book.

While the collection as a whole is known as Aliens vs. Predator, the two character types have their own card art that only features the character at hand. An exception would be the Aliens vs. Predator 2-pack. Since human space marines were included in the initial Aliens line, the Predator was marketed as an alternative enemy to the Aliens. A figure cardback reads:

"The stage is set for the universe's two most ferocious enemies. It's the gruesome and evil Aliens against the big-game hunter Predator. Who will win... the beast or the hunter? Can the Predator stop the evil Aliens before the galaxy is destroyed?!?!?!"[1][2]

The Aliens: Hive Wars series was released in 1995, which included various Aliens, Predators, and larger scaled space marines. More figures, including a female Predator and an Alien/Predator/Smash Mason 3-pack, were designed for this series but never released as part of the line.

Six sets of Aliens and Predator Micro Machines were also planned by Galoob in 1995 but never released. This would have also included the LV-426/Outer World Station Action Fleet Playset. Thanks in part to the research of toy collectors, many photos of these unreleased toys and prototypes have shown up on the Web in recent years.[3]

In December 2002, McFarlane Toys released a highly detailed Alien vs. Predator deluxe set.[4] In 2004, they produced a series of figures based on the Alien vs. Predator film. This line, however, is notorious for its disastrously poor quality. Many accessory parts originally planned for inclusion were suddenly scrapped before their release, leaving the figures with shoddy and incomplete display bases. In addition, some figures even had broken parts within their packages. Alongside the articulated figures, McFarlane also released statuesque display sets depicting scenes from the film.

Hot Toys produced highly detailed 16' tall figures for every movie including Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem in 2007. That same year, NECAreleased two series of Requiem figures.[5]

PITCH BLACK

PITCH BLACK (2000)

The dullwitted comments of producer Tom Engleman (THE TEMP) in the Jan. 2000 issue of Fangoria Magazine did nothing for encouraging me to watch this flick ("I'm aiming for Scream in space."). Obviously his highest aspirations were to do nothing more than try and imitate a movie that was both a send-up and a condemnation of all the slasher movie clichés that had come before. SCREAM was Director Wes Craven's attempt to expose and finally lay to rest all the tired old Horror movie clichés (particularly Slasher movies) that had been used yea unto death: possibly in order to infuse Horror with wholly new blood and new criteria. Arguably, his success with SCREAM and SCREAM 2 may have ushered in the new face of Horror. 1999 was, without a doubt, the year for Horror movies. From Sommer's witty THE MUMMY, to the amateur but startling efforts found in THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, 1999's top grosser's were all Horror (as well as some of the worst failures). Disney gave us THE SIXTH SENSE and Artisan came back from BWP with a second helping in the form of STIR OF ECHOES. Warner Brothers gave us the intense THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and gothic old Tim Burton finally cut his first true Horror movie with SLEEPY HOLLOW. But with all this new energy and creativity, Engleman only wanted to copy someone else who was copying someone else.

Yet I saw this movie and actually liked it. Why?

Luckily, Director and co-writer David Twohy (THE ARRIVAL, BELOW and as a writer: CRITTERS 2, WARLOCK, THE FUGITIVE, LAST GASP) was at the helm of PITCH BLACK. David's skills at movie making aren't that sharp yet, but his movies always give me the feeling that he's a man of unshakable sincerity. He really wants to make a great film. As such the ideas he presents, while not always as deep or devastating as the Thriller / Horror movie crowd may like, are never-the-less creative and original. David never goes for the expected "Cat-in-the-closet" trick. Its a mark in his films that sets him apart and makes me look forward to his next one. His humor is also unique and fun.

PITCH BLACK starts off with deep space transport ship Hunter-Gratzner on a very long journey. The folks inside are in deep sleep - no warp factor five here - as their ship glides through the tail of a passing comet. The tail of a comet is largely made up of ice with some solid debris (thus the "dirty snowball" moniker). It's this debris that shoots right through the hull destroying the integrity of the ship. The ship computer aims the craft toward the nearest planet and wakes the crew. As they awake they are surprised to find themselves falling onto the deck. The gravity of the planet has taken hold and they are spiraling down through the atmosphere, their hull, not made for such a thing, burning away. The ship does have emergency air brakes for cases of crash landings and the pilot attempts to control the trajectory of the ship. The whole scene is pretty hairy though not without a few bad gaffs.

When all is said and done, all the crew but one are dead. Fry (Radha Mitchell) is now the Captain and the few passengers are in her care. Among them are Johns (Cole Hauser:PAPARAZZI) who isn't what he appears to be, and Riddick (Vin Diesel: SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), an escaped convict murderer who is exactly what he appears to be.

Also among the cast of potential victims are Keith David (THE THING, THEY LIVE, THE PUPPET MASTERS, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) as Islamic holy man Imam and Lewis Fitz-Gerald as the delicate dealer in Antiquities. It is his cargo of esoteric trinkets that help save the folk. And do these folk need help.

The planet they've crashed on is inhabited by cave dwelling creatures. Most of them are ferocious varmints that are such excellent killers, they have nearly stripped the planet clean of all other life. Now these creatures, with little else to prey on than each other, are dying out. The dying planet has three suns. Two of which revolve around each other and a third in a faraway orbit. In this system however, all revolve around a massive sol sized ringed planet. Such are the dynamics of this part of the Universe that the planet our protagonists are on, only sees night once every twenty two years. It is at this time that the cave dwelling animals come out and wreak havoc. Our troupe has picked a bad time to crash.

As Nightfall descends and the humans realize their fate so the tension picks up. They must survive the night, and no one knows how long that night will last. Days? Weeks? During this time of stress and panic loyalties will be traded, trusts will be broken, and secrets will come out. The survivors will have to stay together if they are to survive the odds.

For those among us who are fans of the late Good Doctor, yes - this movie acknowledges its plot device from Isaac Asimov's Hugo winning short story, NIGHTFALL. That was the working title of PITCH BLACK and while the movie has little in common with the story, it is still a damn sight better than the actual movie Nightfall which was released during Dr. Asimov's lifetime (and left him unimpressed with Hollywood).

Among the standouts in PITCH BLACK are the Giger-esque creatures of this planet. Blind, they use sound and the photosensitive ability of their skin to navigate. The idea of a mind that "sees" with sound was put to good effect thanks to the imaginative works of Peter Chiang (KRULL) and Richard Bain (DOLORES CLAIRBORNE). Knowing how the varmints can "see" makes us understand the potentials for survival and death among the survivors all the better.

Another stand out is Vin Diesel. As the primal and murderous Riddick, Diesel's part was written with little beyond a few threatening diatribes and the expected thuggish sound bite. Yet Diesel infuses his character beyond the script. The movie calls for him to remain enigmatic and hide his eyes behind dark glasses, the whole TERMINATOR she-bang. Instead Diesel portrays his killer with a human soul. He admits to killing before and he may do it again if it means his survival, but like a true predator he doesn't kill unless he feels threatened - or hungry. David Twohy must have noticed Diesel's ability too because there is a definite shift halfway in the movie with Riddick going from a secondary to the main character.

The story was written by the Wheat Brothers, Jim and Ken, whose banal credits include SILENT SCREAM, A NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET 4, THE FLY II, THE BIRDS II [TV], THE STEPFORD HUSBANDS and worse. The script was most likely elevated by the hand of Director/Writer David Twohy.

Though it misses several moments where it could have gone from interesting to stark staring scares for the audience, PITCH BLACK is still a fun movie and gets 3 Shriek Girls from me.
